What is lay bwah?
Lay bwah — our playful pronunciation of les bois, French for "the woods" — is more than just our future family name. It's a celebration of new roots taking hold and old growth flourishing together.
In the forest, two saplings planted side by side will reach for the same light. Their roots tangle beneath the soil, sharing water, sharing strength. Woods are patient. They grow in circles, ring by ring, holding each season within themselves. They weather storms by bending together. They make a home for countless wondrous things.
As we become the Woods family, we embrace this symbolism: two individuals, two families, two stories growing into something abundant and enduring. The woods teach us that love is not a single moment but an accumulation of days, of growth, of two lives choosing again and again to reach toward the same light.
And no forest thrives alone. The richness of the woods comes from diversity—different species, different strengths, each essential to the whole. Our forest flourishes because of you: family who planted our earliest seeds, friends who have grown alongside us through every season, loved ones from every corner of our world.
The French connects us to a tradition that finds beauty in the simplest words. Les bois, the woods, suddenly soft with meaning, carrying the poetry of speaking love in another tongue. The phonetic spelling — lay bwah — is purely us: a little irreverent, warmly accessible, and unafraid to find joy in the journey from "what it is" to "what we make it."
Welcome to lay bwah, where two become one forest, and love takes root.

I received a save the date, is this the wedding venue?
The wedding is at Hotel Chelsea, scroll up for more details. The save the dates are postcards that we collected from restaurants around New York City. We tried our best to curate them based on vibe/menu/etc for each person that we sent a card to! We hope you like them! :)
Can we bring our children?
Space is super limited, so the kiddos are being told to stay home for this one. Besides, parents need some time to themselves, and we're happy to provide that!
What should we wear?
If you thought Charissa wouldn't take this opportunity to have an occasion for everyone to dress up, you're sadly mistaken. We will be providing a lookbook soon, so you'll have plenty of time to prepare! Sign up for details and we'll send you more details as they come!
Where should we stay?
We aren't going to have a room block. However, it's NYC, so there's definitely an abundance of hotels nearby. We'll provide a list of hotels we like, things to see, and places to eat...sign up for details and we'll send them as they're available!
Will Mars be there?
Mars isn't allowed to come to our wedding unfortunately. If you want to see him, you can go visit him at the Tanganyika Wildlife Park, let him know we sent ya!
Do hippos get married?
We had to do our research here. But...No—hippos don’t get married. They don’t form lifelong pair bonds; mating is opportunistic and polygynous.
How hippo relationships actually work
- No monogamy: Hippos don’t pair up or stay exclusive.
- Polygynous system: Dominant males control river or lake territories and mate with multiple females.
- Minimal bonding: Mating doesn’t create a lasting social bond between male and female.
- Female independence: After mating, females handle pregnancy (~8 months), birth, and calf care largely on their own.
